This is a topic close my heart as I suffer from Dyscalculia and only understood it when I worked with neurodiversity in my professional life.
No wonder I struggled to manage the accounts for my Independent Occupational Therapy business! At school I was considered such a dunce at it I was not even entered into the Maths exams, and was told I could never be a teacher!
For many people Maths is a subject and they have to work at, but for others it appears impossible, unfathomable, frustrating, and try as they might, they cannot ‘get’ it. Intelligent children getting good grades in other subjects may be failing their Maths, despite extra coaching.
‘Dyscalculia’ is part of the spectrum of neurodiversity covering dyslexia, dyspraxia, and ADHD. It means “a difficulty to calculate”.
Like the other Neurodiversity it will have been present since birth, and shows up in a variety of ways in different individuals. It may include: problems counting ,Visual-spatial difficulties, Time keeping , learning tables , poor map reading , Mental Maths (working simple sums out in your head ) or understanding the ‘language’ of Maths .

Ann Arbor publishers provide remedial materials for Dyscalculia such as Number Tracking, Fractions, Cues and Signals in Maths and a Test of thinking Style in Mathematics. It’s hard to help because the brain does not seem to contain the connections needed to make sense of Maths, and this is probably genetically inherited.
Basically it’s how we are wired up and we have to accept that working in a Bank might not be the best career choice for us, so concentrate on your strengths and work around your weaknesses!
